Our history

Asian Health Institute (AHI) is a Japanese non-governmental organization (NGO). It was founded by Dr. Hiromi KAWAHARA and his friends who were Japanese medical personnel and had served in several Asian countries in 1970s.
They realized that curative medical care alone was not a lasting solution to grassroots health problems. Instead, they saw a more effective and sustainable approach in developing human resources to promote community-based action for health and development. To support enhancing well-being of the marginalized people in Asia, AHI was established in 1980 with the philosophy of “Sharing for Self-Help”.
