What surprised you during the course?
The participants in charge of the next day’s session prepare the session, plan the schedule, and manage the facilitation on the actual day. In terms of daily life as well, the participants take care of tasks such as washing dishes and cleaning, assigning roles and managing their own living arrangements. At the beginning of the training, I was surprised that the participants had to handle so many things by themselves. However, I realized that all of these were part of the learning process. During the daily reflections, I was able to look back on what I had learned that day and how I had participated. The day-to-day process of the training changed me.
I began to feel motivated to do what I could and to participate more actively. The support from other participants also played a big role. I came to realize that this training exists to encourage participants and to strengthen their leadership.
In the cultural context of Timor-Leste, where traditional autocratic leadership values are strong, the challenge is how I can convey the leadership skills I have learned to the CBOs. I will put this into practice.
How will you apply your learning?
Also, I realized the importance of making schedules. In our culture, we sometimes tend to spend time just sitting and talking. However, I believe this time could be used for new activities. I think CBO members could make better use of their time. I would like to encourage CBOs to independently practice creating and following their own CBO’s meetings.
